Entire chapters are devoted to such topics as choosing a tour, what to pack (and not to pack), photographic equipment (including underwater photography and video), Galápagos history, wildlife (with an orientation towards photo opportunities), and a detailed tour of the islands. In the early 90's (pre-internet!) GALAPAGOS TRAVEL offered the largest range of Galápagos-specific books for sale. Most were either unavailable at your local booksellers, or were so specialized that few people knew about them. These days nearly everything is available on the internet however, so it makes sense for us to refer you to a specialty bookseller - they are able to stock a far wider range of titles that we could, and buying in bulk they are able to extend special pricing as well. We however do still have a bit of our old stock on hand, available directly through our office. The following are currently in stock from GALAPAGOS TRAVEL: WHALES, DOLPHINS, AND PORPOISES, Mark Carwardine, 1995. Paperback, 255 pp., $19.95. We've used a lot of whale identification books, and this is by far the best. The illustrations are numerous and are incredibly well done. There are even drawings of action sequences, including breaching and diving, which help in the identification. Often, there are squares showing color variations, which are also quite useful. While cetaceans are not usually the highlight of a Galápagos trip, this book is highly recommended as a guide to whales throughout your world travels. THE BEAK OF THE FINCH, Jonathan Weiner, 1994. Paperback, 336 pp., $14.95. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction (1995). Easy-to-read, this is one of the most significant and enlightening books on evolution since Darwin's Origin of Species. The author presents a very personal account of the research on the Darwin's finches conducted by Peter and Rosemary Grant. The Grants have been studying the finches on the island of Daphne Major in the Galápagos since 1973. During this time, they witnessed and thoroughly documented evolutionary changes in the finches - a truly significant scientific achievement. The second half of the book is quite thought-provoking, as Weiner puts the Grants' findings into the context of contemporary evolutionary research and thought. This book is very highly recommended to everyone as must reading. A FIELD GUIDE TO MARINE MOLLUSKS OF GALAPAGOS, Cleveland Hickman, 1999. Spiral bound, 150pp., 196 photographs and several illustrations, $20.95. This field guide describes and illustrates in full color more than 250 species of the most common and characteristic of Galápagos intertidal and shallow-water mollusks. The accurate illustrations and precise descriptions enable visitors to identify any of the common mollusks encountered, whether seashells washed ashore or living mollusks seen while diving or snorkeling. Includes identification features, glossary, and index to scientific names. |
